Introduction
Embarking on a doctoral journey is a formidable and intimidating task in itself, but when combined with the responsibilities of being a mother of two young children and working full-time in a foreign country, it becomes a truly difficult task. This story is one of determination, and the desire to be the first person in my family to earn a master’s and doctoral degree.

The Beginning
My journey towards a doctoral degree began with a dream, a dream that was nurtured over years of curiosity and a relentless desire to grow. Growing up, I always had a desire to perform better. This desire led me to pursue a bachelor’s degree in Spanish language and literature and later a Master’s degree in Applied Linguistics. But alas, I could not get enough of studying, and I set my sights on earning a doctoral degree.
Balancing Motherhood
Life changed drastically as I became a mother to two beautiful children. I embarked on my doctoral journey when my second was just three months old. Late-night feedings, diaper changes, and crying were accompanied by weekly assignments and discussions and interactions with teachers and classmates. However, being a mother only fueled my determination. I wanted to show my children, especially my daughter, that girls could do anything they set their hearts and minds to.

Working Full-Time in a Foreign Country
As if motherhood wasn’t demanding enough, I was living and working (I still am) in a foreign country, far away from my family, with only my husband as support. The distance from my home country and my support system other than my husband added to the complexity of my journey. It often felt like I was juggling multiple tasks and responsibilities, each vying for my time and attention.
Studying Part-Time
To accommodate my responsibilities as a mother and a full-time employee, I made the decision to pursue my doctoral degree part-time. While my children played, I did assignments, at home, in playgrounds and different play areas in fast food restaurants. The road to a Ph.D. or Ed.D (as mine is called) is arduous, but I was determined to overcome all obstacles.
The Desire to Grow
My desire to grow intellectually and personally was the driving force behind my decision to pursue a doctoral degree. I wanted to push the boundaries of my knowledge, contribute to my field of study, and above all challenge myself. The thought of being the first person in my family to earn a doctoral degree added an extra layer of significance to my journey. I wanted to set an example for my children and demonstrate the importance of perseverance and ambition.

Overcoming Challenges
My journey was not without its challenges. There were times when I felt overwhelmed and many times I thought of giving up. The constant juggling act of motherhood, work, and studies took a toll on me, both physically and emotionally. However, in those moments of doubt, I reminded myself of my goals, my dreams, and the example I wanted to set for my children.
Finding Support
I couldn’t have made it this far without the support of my family, friends, and mentors. They provided encouragement, and a helping hand when I needed it most. Their belief in me was a fire for my determination, and gave me the strength to keep moving forward.

Conclusion
My doctoral journey as a mother of two young children in a foreign country, working full-time, and studying part-time has been a challenging and rewarding experience. It has taught me the value of determination and sacrifice, and the power of dreams. I am proud to be the first person in my family to earn a doctoral degree, and I hope that my story inspires others to pursue their dreams, no matter the obstacles they face. The desire to grow and achieve greatness is a powerful source of motivation, and with determination and support, anything is possible.
