Introduction
This summer, my family and I boarded a Boeing 737 towards New York City, the city that never sleeps. This city is not just a concrete jungle filled with skyscrapers and busy streets, it’s also an amazing destination for families with young children. While prices have skyrocketed and food and entrances to attractions can be expensive, there are many free activities that parents and kids can enjoy. Whether you’re a local looking for a fun day out or a visitor exploring the Big Apple, here are 5 free things to do in NYC with the little ones.
- Explore Central Park
Central Park is a truly remarkable landmark located in the heart of Manhattan. There are so many different fun things to do in those 2.5 miles of greenery. For example, you can take your kids on a nature walk by exploring the park’s many walking trails, spotting turtles and fish in the ponds, or even have a picnic on the Great Lawn. Also, the Central Park Zoo offers free admission for children under 3 years old and is a great place to introduce your kids to animals from around the world. The iconic Alice in Wonderland statue is a must, where your kids can climb and play.

- Staten Island Ferry
Don’t miss out on the free The Staten Island Ferry service. This double-deckered boat provides breathtaking views of the Statue of Liberty, Ellis Island, and the Manhattan skyline! Set sail from Whitehall Terminal in Lower Manhattan and enjoy a cruising 25-minute ride to Staten Island. The best part? You can turn right around and come back without leaving the terminal, making it a fun and budget-friendly mini-cruise for the kids, or you can stop off and take pictures up close with Lady Liberty herself.

- Story time at the New York Public Library
While on vacation, foster a love for reading at The New York Public Library. The library offers programs and events for children, including free story times. The library in itself is a spectacular work of architecture, and you can even get nice shots for your Instagram page. It’s a wonderful way to spend a morning or afternoon, especially if you visit during summer and want to run away from the heat.

- Walk the High-Line
This new walkable experience is a must for kids. Get those steps in! This elevated park was built on a former railway track, offers a unique view of New York City. Pass by windows of high-rise apartment buildings, sit on the integrated benches on the side, and take part in the fun telescope where you will see your eye on the screen. Be sure to visit Chelsea Market at the end of the high-line. This market was once the home of the Nabisco cookie factory and now houses a food hall and a shopping mall. Don’t miss out on the gelato shop at the entrance!

5. The Vessel at Hudson Yards
When in New York City with kids, make sure to stop by The Vessel at Hudson Yards. This futuristic beehive structure is soon to be an iconic piece of architecture. When we visited, climbing up was not allowed, but entry to the first floor was. Kids will love running around in the spacious yard, and adults can even get some shopping done at the nearby mall behind the Vessel.

Conclusion
New York City is not just for adults, Times Square comes to mind, but it’s a wonderful place to vacation as a family. These 5 free activities are just some of the many fun-filled places to visit in the Big Apple. Whether you’re exploring Central Park’s natural beauty, cruising on the Staten Island Ferry, enjoying a story at the library, venturing through the High-Line, or frolicking in The Vessel at Hudson Yards, there’s something for everyone. So grab your stroller, pack plenty of water snacks, and get ready to make memories with your kids.
